I found my passion when I was in my twenties, and it was the best “gift” I could have received from the universe.
These days, twenty-somethings are still doing a lot of soul searching, an expedition that often lasts deep into their 30s, but for me, I had already gotten to know myself quite well at an early age. I started my first business, a women’s clothing boutique called Tango, at the age of 25, and really started putting myself out there. I had a fire in my heart, but had limited business experience, so the journey was an adventure to say the least.
Lucky for me, passion and ambition can move mountains. My fire actually drove me to be one of the best-liked and well-respected shop owners in the downtown Peterborough community.
Much like they were in my growing-up years, people were naturally drawn to me, and would often look to me for support and guidance. Since they felt comfortable opening up to me, I knew I was on to something special. Customers would spend their time in my shop confiding in me; seeking a listening ear, but also looking for advice on their current situations. Rumbles of bad dating experiences were spoken of in hushed tones, and my customers seemed concerned at how they would ever be able to meet a well-suited partner if they couldn’t find them on their own.
Many were concerned about finding a mate online, given the fact that there was no privacy to their search. One of their primary worries was how to keep such a deeply personal matter confidential.
It was around that time that I started to think seriously about starting a matchmaking service. It was a no-brainer really. I was a natural connector, and often introduced my friends to other people I knew, and connected colleagues to other well-suited professionals. I had already assisted in some successful love matches over the years, and figured it wouldn’t hurt to do some research into the world of matchmaking to see if this was something I could enjoy doing full-time. At the time, the shop was feeling the recession, so I felt that there was an opportunity in front of me to start fresh with a new business. In my mind, finding love for others was totally recession-proof.
I spent several months researching my potential competitors. I discovered what I liked about their businesses, and was able to determine what, if anything, I thought they were missing. I put myself into the equation: if I were considering a matchmaker, what type of luxury services would I be looking for?
Match Me launched in May 2009. The business model was created for busy, professional singles who valued their privacy above all else. Over the years, we have tweaked aspects of our services based on our clients’ needs, but the heart of our business is still the same. We come from a basis of passion, understanding, care and kindness – much like what you would want in your ideal relationship!
There is something to being a “Canadian Cupid” that many don’t understand, even if they are in the love business themselves. We succeed because of our clients’ happiness. The team at Match Me Canada works diligently to assist our clients, and that starts with choosing to work with individuals we believe are a good match for us.
It isn’t always easy being someone’s personal love assistant, but it’s incredibly rewarding and one of the most special roles someone can have in this life. Helping someone find long-lasting love warms my heart. Being a part of someone else’s journey to find love is an incredible honour I never have once taken for granted. It’s a milestone for each of our clients, and we are here to help them enjoy the ride.
As for me, I was made for this. My entire life revolves around people and love. What could be better? (Oh yeah, my husband and I own a winery in Prince Edward County too!) There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not grateful for finding my life’s purpose, and I feel blessed to have found other strong and passionate women to be a part of my incredible matchmaking team.
Life is good.
